MAHLER is a series of memories and impressions taken from the composer's mementous life, set to his superb and evocative music. Jealousy over his attractive wife, the insanity of a fellow music student, is conversion from the Jewish to Catholic faith, the tragic death of his young daughter, his own ill health - these are just some of the elements chosen for this symbolic visualisation of Mahler and his music. MAHLER is Ken Russell's clearest and perhaps most personal film. Gustav Mahler was born in Bohemia in 1860 and died in Vienna in 1911. He composed ten symphonies, the last unfinished, and many beautiful songs.
The film features the Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam, conducted by Bernard Haitink, and stars Robert Powell (as Mahler), Georgina Hale, Rosalie Crutchley, Mariam Karlin and Dana Gillespie. |
